RE: Something Lurks hidden in the c200 beta firmware!!
Yes, the PTY is very unstable. Most of the times, I am not able to exit the Telnet window properly, only via the close button. After some, it is not allowing any connection. Possibly I can patch the securetty to 20 so that it can allow at least another 10 windows.

That's what I thought as well, "someone" in the know hinted late one night in the shout box that the reason the Popbox had to be locked down was due to licensing requirements enforced by a very large, US-only, online content provider (I'm intentionally leaving out names in case there are still any NDA's at large on the subject). This was all during the hype shortly before the PopApps market was announced for the A/C series players. Since then, I think it has been decided that due to the PCH being an international product, the demand for US-only content apps wouldn't be great enough to justify the licensing costs thus the recent loosening of telnet restrictions. A lot of this is speculation I've pieced together from rumors, hints, and press-release statements; so take it with a grain of salt. |

I was hoping that very large, US-only, online content provider would make its' way to the 200-series players after launching on the Popbox, but I've since given up on that pipe dream after seeing this thread and a few other hints scattered around the forums. Since it's never going to happen, they might as well open the devices up a bit. C-200 + WD Scorpio Blue 500GB Seek first to understand, then to be understood. |
