RE: NMJ vs YAMJ vs Oversight vs UMC ?
Let me phrase things different:-

Yes they are both dynamic, in that way the are the same.

Oversight can, in addition to the usual jukebox manner with files named and ready, also be used for daily downloads using nzbget/rss feeds.

So I'd say that as NMJ cannot do that and neither can YAMJ, that they are also somewhat alike.

So who's up for updating the WIKI Jukebox comparison articleTongue

Cool, I like that way of thinking Smile

The UMC gui is only there for configuration and database maintenance. The scanner runs headless, with periodic reports back to the gui, if that's where it was initiated from. If your fileserver or NAS will support Java apps, then it should be possible for the UMC scanner to be run on that. The UMC (NMT) user interface (frontend) runs entirely on the PCH, driven by an sql database which can reside on any storage accessible to the PCH.

UMC is by far the best match to my requirements. However, as has been stated already, development appears to have ceased (for the time being?). The current release (v2.0.8) fixes some bugs from the previous release, and adds some significant new features - unfortunately, those new features have bugs of their own. v2.0.8 was released as a public alpha because of the shortage of resource to complete development and pre-release testing.

I understand that it is not easily possible for the development to be continued by other people because crucial parts of the s/w require knowledge which has been made available to the developers under an NDA. If that were not the case, I would make efforts to become more familiar with java in order to assist with the development.

I, for one, do earnestly hope that the current lull in development is not permanent.

RE: NMJ vs YAMJ vs Oversight vs UMC ?
To me the biggest negative to YAMJ is that it isn't a DB. If it was a real DB vs a collection of xml files you could to more with managing & maintaining it offline or making changes such as skins etc because it wouldn't require regenerating everything for a new skin. I feel that the next evolution of YAMJ is to become a real DB where we can easily go in & edit things like catagories, genres for specific videos without editing code. Even something as simple as a flat file db like Excel would be easier to navigate.

I like YAMJ, with the skins available it is pretty slick. the others I don't think have as nice a presentation.

RE: NMJ vs YAMJ vs Oversight vs UMC ?
I tried YAMJ and Oversight and came to the conclusion that Oversight is the best pick for me.

In a nutshell:
First off it runs on the PCH. I bought a PCH (and left my pinnacle showcenter unused) so I don't have to have my PC 'on' at all times. Now, with YAMJ, I still need lots of PC CPU to get my jukebox up-to-date.
The Oversight I run (latest release as we speak) is presentation wise good. It uses fanart as well.

Pro's and Con's to both products:

YAMJ:
+ Easy install (as long as you only install YAMJ and not any Manager)
+ Better looks as compared to Oversight
+ Integration of my NAS is easily done (just place the jukebox on a share on your NAS through your PC)
- Manager GUI which does not work fine (to much of a hassle to get it to work)
- Runs on a PC, so I have to use PC cpu to get my jukebox up-to-date
- No integration with NZB_get (which is my primairy nzb download tool)

Oversight:
+ Easy install (through the use of the CSI (tnx to Ger for this!), one click install)
+ Runs on PCH
+ Integration with NZB_get
+ Automatically updated Jukebox
++ All my info is downloaded in Dutch (without me configuring anything at all in Oversight to do this)
- Have problems in fully integrating in with my NAS (NZB_Get renaming to NAS in Oversight)

Again, this is my opinion and I used both products with the purpose to use it as my primairy jukebox (not just for testing).

Cheers,

Danny

P.S. didn't test NMJ (only on 200 series) and UMC as this requires the PC again (and I think if you don't mind using a pc to make/update your jukebox YAMJ is the better pick)

Friends just keep you away from TV.

RE: NMJ vs YAMJ vs Oversight vs UMC ?
I am periodically updating threads that appear to come up in N00b searches. This thread is a top result for "oversight vs yamj vs umc". A main drawback to Oversight mentioned in this thread was halted development. However, it appears that development has since resumed. Therefore, halted development is no longer a drawback to Oversight.
