Can UPS'd Synology DS shutdown PCH
I have recently purchased an APC UPS to protect my Synology Diskstation (DS411j) from power outages. It apprently has Network UPS support (whatever that means).

Does any one know how I can get the Diskstation to cleanly shutdown my A210 pch, which has its own vulnerable HHD, when the former detects a power failure?

A210, 2TB Samsung F3EG, Panasonic TXP50VT20B, Homeplug AV200, Synology DS411j.

In a word no!

Network UPS support means you can connect another Synology NAS to the same UPS and the first Diskstation will tell it via the network to shut down cleanly in the event of a power failure.

The HDD in your A210 is only vulnerable when it's in use so unless you use it for torrents/newsgroup downloads etc then it should only be in use while you're actually watching something so if you have it hooked up to your UPS (else the whole point is moot anyway) and the power goes out I would guess you would notice and be able to get up and shut it down before the UPS batteries run out Wink

Actually, you can..

I'm not sure what the synology can do or if anyone made any tools for this but 1 possible approach is running a script when the ups is about to turn off.. it could then issue the same available from csi shutdown command to have the pch turn off. Every ups uses NUT for networked status of a ups between each other. theres ports of nut for just about every flavor of linux, nas, even windows.. I've used a ups connected to a battery and had desktops and devices poll it for battery status. You could probably edit the nut config files on the synology to run a script when its close to turning off..

Another option and maybe someone like vaidysar is up for this would be to port nut to the pch, then it can talk to another device connected to the same ups to shut itself off. of courser you can also talk to anything on a ups (assuming hte pch is on a ups) and just make sure your pch turns itself before it's battery dies

Sweet, I stand corrected.

I think I'm gonna have to look some more into this now, not for my PCH, I have a HP Proliant N36L Microserver and a Readynas NV+ connected to the same UPS and was wondering if there was anyway to get them both to shut down gracefully in the (unfortunately all too common where I live) event of a power failure.

RE: Can UPS'd Synology DS shutdown PCH
I happen to have a readynas nv+ so I can say it will work but there is a huge gotcha you need to plan for. the nv+ once it powers off will not power back on until someone presses the power button. So when power comes back if the server boots up on its own, it cannot talk to the nv+ to get ups status. the nv+ does not support wake on lan so there is no automatic way to turn it back on without modding the power button to something like the ups contacts (theres an output on the ups that will act like a button push). Now the opposite will work. you could have teh server connected to the ups, use nut on the server and the nv+ can talk to the server for ups status. the server which turns itself on will always be able to get ups status. of course you need to always have it on for the nv+ to use it... (weird cycle).

My current ups setup is: (they aren't small ups units)

UPS1:
readynas pro connected to ups (pro will turn itself on)
- talking to pro for status:
-- readynas nv+
-- acer revo running ubuntu server
-- guru+ plug server
-- sheevaplug server
-- (some gear that doesn't need to turn off nice)

UPS2:
Desktop running WHS+das
- talking for status
-- pvr "server"

RE: Can UPS'd Synology DS shutdown PCH
Hi all,
it is possible !
on your synology you can add a nut client IP...
then on client side on the PCH, you should run nut with the correct config.
In nut client you can configure the behaviour i.e. shuting down your PCH...

Does anyone has a nut binary for pch a110 ?

Oz
