PCH freezes / crashes when watching high bitrate HD video from internal HDD
I have a problem that I thought was MKV related, but now I think it's purely bitrate.
Watching HD content from internal HDD, a 500 GB WD Caviar WD5000AAJS, would sometimes result in the screen freezing on a video frame and the PCH would be unresponsive forcing a hard shut down. This "sometimes" slowly became an "often". Watching Planet Earth MKV's would cause problems at first, then smaller 720p content became a problem (about 3 or so months ago).

I decided to replace my internal drive and start fresh with a newer, bigger one.

My new internal HDD is a 1 TB WD 10EARS (I know, the alignment issue, but I waited until PCH firmware could address this). Yesterday I did a fresh format by the PCH with had the latest firmware with Apps installed. I copied my media from the old drive via usb (sata mount) to another external drive, then connected that external drive to the PCH and copied the media to the new drive.

I tested some of the 1080p MKV's I had and it's the SAME PROBLEM! Then I tested the DVD5 Casino Royale scene with the crazy bitrate. I put it on repeat and it froze on about the 3rd playback. I tested the .m2ts version and it ALSO froze, but on about the 6th or 7th playback.

Also note that playing any content from a usb external drive has never frozen. I even played from the old drive connected via usb and it was fine. I'd very much like to be able to use an internal drive.

Please help!
Is my PCH dying?
Would formatting my internal drive to NTFS and running Apps off a usb stick solve my problems?

Thanks in advance.

I think it is the last firmware. Mine is working well with m2ts iso blurays with high bitrates around 40mbp! no problem, playing fine

RE: PCH freezes / crashes when watching high bitrate HD video from internal HDD
Nothing to do with bitrate.

Mediainfo output?

There is a problem with MKV playback where after time it starts to stutter. Usually it is the likes of Apple Trailers and other MKV files that have either GOP settings or AAC audio. Go to Apple and download any of their 1080p trailers and you'll see the problem.

RE: PCH freezes / crashes when watching high bitrate HD video from internal HDD
For OP:

Is this a A200/210 or C200?

If it's a C200, can you try changing the SATA-cable. Some users have had problems that were solved with a simple cable replacement.

If it's a A200, take off the top and unscrew the disk caddy lock screw (the one on a plastic tab at the end away from the motherboard). Then see if you can push the disk further into the SATA connector. Maybe even unscrew it from the caddy if that makes it easier.
On my A200 the fit wasn't perfect, and when I tightened the lock screw the disk came into the SATA connector at an angle. I didn't have any problems because of this, but maybe yours is more off center than mine.

The reason for the suggestions above is how the same disk works from USB but not when internal. That suggests the problem is hardware related.

Also, if you do open up the unit, check that the fan is working and that the heat sink isn't loose. The problem could be heat related.

No audio for either of these.

Pain,
I checked the sata connection and it's straight and well connected.
i actually replaced the fan/heat sink with a more effective heat sink because i thought this was the issue, but it's still happening. any easy way to monitor the temp? i stuck a cooking thermometer under it (LOL) and it peaked at about 110-115 Fahrenheit. not in the least scientific, but it's what i had.

Quote:The reason for the suggestions above is how the same disk works from USB but not when internal. That suggests the problem is hardware related.
this is my fear. what the warranty like on these things? i've had it for about 14 months. i'm trying it tomorrow with a ntfs drive and no apps installed, though i'm not confident this will fix it. i'll also try the apple trailers just for good measure and some network streamed content.
let me know if i need to post anymore mediainfo, but this is happening on a lot of different mkv's with a lot of different settings. generally, everything has been HD, hence the bitrate question.
thanks for the responses so far.

RE: PCH freezes / crashes when watching high bitrate HD video from internal HDD
well last thing I can think of is a electrical problem... causing false currents on your mainboard or a bad connection showing itself when the heat stresses it.
If you have a ATX PC power supply you could try replacing the one in the C200 (the 14 months make me assume it's a C200) heat stress connector issue can be proven by using a hair dryer on full blast on the mainboard after a cold start during first movie playback...... a heat issue will prove itself within 2 minutes...... don't run it longer than that.....
Earth loops and powerspikes from airco's and fridges? but I assume you already have all attached device on the same grounded and spike protected powerbrick..

PCH-A100/A210/C200/A400 500GB EXT3 HDD<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Onkyo TX-NR1010<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Panasonic TX-P46S10 + 6 Bowers & Wilkins speakers.
10 NTFS 2TB USB drives on 3 hubs attached to the A400, 2 Seagate blackarmour NAS 3TB, 2 Seagate Central NAS 4TB.

The inability to setup and configure the NMT should not be disguised as a defect of the box...

@fabiogesto

It's better if you create your own thread, instead of posting in an old thread like this. The button "New Thread" is to the right, on top of the forum list.

To answer your question, I think using MPEG-2 video at this high resolution and bitrate is probably a problem. I don't know enough to say for sure.
If you encode them yourself try using h264 in .mp4 or .mkv container. The program Handbrake is my favourite for this.

When you post a problem with a video file you can use the program "MediaInfo" to extract data about the file. It reveals much more information than the infor you posted here.

Get the program from here: http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download

When you run the program you can switch output to text, and then copy & paste to the forum.
