PS3 Jailbreak / Homebrew Apps
Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone here has a Playstation 3 and has been reading the recent news regarding the jailbreak and the new/upcoming homebrew apps.

A developer has released today an app called Showtime (PS3 Homebrew Home Theater System application), which is a media player. I'm still not sure if it has MKV support/subtitle, etc.

I'm wondering if the PS3 can become a future replacement for a NMT such as the C-200 (I own one). PS3 Homebrew scene has just started, so I guess it will take some time to see nice apps getting released (perhaps it will take an year to see more features on it). Basically, I use my C200 to watch MKV movies, network attached storage (NAS) and P2P/NZB

I don't know the hardware of the C-200 too much ... All I know, is that it has a RISC micro-processor that has a focus for video processing (correct me if I'm wrong), versus PS3 which has an IBM Cell processor with 8 SPUs.

I'd like to open this discussion here, since it's a very interesting topic for me (PS3 had a huge power that was under control by Sony - now after the jailbreak the doors are open and the possibilities seems to be endless for devs).

Thanks,

- Rod

RE: PS3 Jailbreak / Homebrew Apps
Hi, apparently the current version don't support mkv (according to some users comments):
http://psgroove.com/content.php?895-Show...aplayer%29

But to be sure I'd like to try how it works

I really hope this project or "XBMC for PS3" can be a solution for MKV playback on the PS3

Best regards

Jerome

yes and no some people will run the ps3 for a media center. but for me its to power hungry and my fat version is kinda loud. because of them two problem I will not be using mine for watching movies and things. And also remember truehd will work if they use ffmpeg maybe but dts-hd will never be able to run in bitstream mode. it will suffer the same problem of xbmc

I've read that XBMC will have a new audioengine in 11.0 (Eden) which will allow for bitstreaming.

There is a couple problems with that. they are doing truehd now by ffmpeg which is iffy. I dont think they ever got dts-hd working. If they do find a way to do it I will be first to comment on it. as its my main issue with xbmc as almost all bluray are no dts-hd not very many doing truehd anymore.
