Yes, anyone can update or download and update the new firmwares. But first a new firmware needs to come out and that hasn't happened in almost a year now. There are separate threads on the new version and when it's coming

I'd think worst case a photo of the unit and showing the serial number sticker should suffice since their actual concern is that you might be trying to cross-flash to different hardware.
