BD ISO plays, MKV doesn't
I've been using the C-200 with ISOs to date but I wanted to reclaim some disk space and also get rid of all the annoying menus, adverts, etc. so that when I want to watch a film I can jump directly to the title itself.
MKV seemed to be the best container to use for this, and MakeMKV would seem to do everything I want, such as splitting TV series DVDs into individual title files, and so on. The Blu Ray's I've run it against have all worked fine so far, until I encountered one yesterday that won't play ball. When you try to play the MKV the PCH just returns immediately with no error message or anything; it just doesn't play the file. Looking at it in MediaInfo the first audio track is a multi-channel LPCM track, which first grabbed my attention as YAMJ gave it a Windows icon. I've tried stripping this track out and still got the same effect. Can anybody tell me what's going on here based on the MediaInfo dump and, also if MKV is really the right container for what I'm trying to do. I don't want to lose any of the Blu Ray 'core' functionality, i.e. all of the available audio types and languages, subtitles, forced subtitles, etc. and would really prefer if I could keep everything inside a single file too. Owww
That's an awful lot of audio & subtitle tracks. If you're not prepared to lose any of those, it's best you stick to BDMV and or ISO because when you think about it a BD ISO file is also a "single file". When I create MKVs out of BDMVs I only get the subs and audio tracks that's relevant to me which means maybe 2 languages for the subs at most and 2 audio tracks (1 HD Audio, 1 not HD Audio). Starting from a BD ISO of around 40~50GB, I usually get a final MKV file of around 18GB. If I lower the bitrate, I can even save more space. You have to realize, MKV is a container so it doesn't change the compression of the audio and video tracks, it just packages it into a single file. RE: BD ISO plays, MKV doesn't
It's probably one of the more fully-featured, shall we say, language variants.
I really want to avoid BD ISOs because I'm fed up of all the crap they force you to sit and watch (like advertising Blu Ray when I'm watching one?!) and just want to press play and get the main feature. If I need to generate a stripped-down ISO at the end then it's something I'd consider but I don't want to have to play around with re-muxing hundreds of titles. MakeMKV looked great because I could open the ISO, choose the one Title that's of interest, hit Go and then end up with an MKV version of the main title that hadn't lost any of its features. But that's really an aside. My concern with this file is why it won't play at all. It just refuses to start. Which makes me wonder a) what's wrong with it (i.e. have I found a MakeMKV bug, a PCH limitation with MKV files or an actual PCH bug), and b) how many other titles am I going to find the same problem with if I use this process? RE: BD ISO plays, MKV doesn't
If you really want to avoid the crap then here's what I do;
Go to Setup > BD/DVD/CD Audio and set Navigation to "Prompt" or "SimpleBD + AVCHD". In those modes, it will just play the main feature of the BD ISO/BDMV. "Prompt" mode doesn't work BTW if you're calling the file from NMJ or YAMJ. As for your MKV, again there's just way too many variables in it because you put everything. If you want to do it scientifically, you have to start with the basics. It's probably one of the audio tracks in there that's causing it. If you are able to isolate it, we can try to replicate your findings and report it to the developers. Now if it only did the same for the DVDs! (06-17-2011 07:32 PM)Dave_D Wrote: As for your MKV, again there's just way too many variables in it because you put everything. If you are able to isolate it, we can try to replicate your findings and report it to the developers. It seemed to be the number of subtitle tracks, unless it was a particular subtitle track that was the problem. I deleted all of the duplicates to leave one (plus forced) in each language variant and it worked fine. What I have noticed, though, is inconsistency in the playback between the MKV files I've generated which isn't ideal. Avatar, for instance, muxed just fine and plays fine, but it defaults to the DTS track and not the HD audio track, which isn't insurmountable but it would be good if it defaulted to the highest quality audio which it does on Simple BD playback, and although it displays the chapter numbers and names it doesn't actually seek any of them when you hit the skip buttons, even though it'll tell you which chapter you are in. Monsters, Inc. defaults correctly to the HD audio track and the chapters all work fine, although in both of these cases the names begin with Chapter 00 rather than Chapter 01 but I guess that could well be the metadata that was in the BluRay in the first place. It seems to handle MKVs sourced from DVDs better than BluRays, so I think my solution may be to convert the DVDs to MKV and leave the BluRays as ISOs with Simple BD playback forced, at least until some of these MKV problems have been resolved. Before I do this, is there a similar solution for DVD ISOs or a container that's better suited to offering the full playback functionality but without adverts, menus, etc.?
