Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
I loaded up a complete rip of avatar on bluray today but subtitles don't automatically play when the Navi speak. If I change subtitles to English 6 they do though. Is there a reason that they dont automatically work like using the regular bluray in a player?

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
they work depending on if they have the force flag set. if they are based off a language setting and are default tracks they dont work right.

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
correct it should not be something you cant fix. make sure you are on the most recent firmware as there was some changes for forced subs though

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
If it's MKV (and was created with MakeMKV) then make sure the forced subtitles flag is set on the particular subtitle sets as it doesn't set them by default.
And make sure you have a subtitle language set in the PCH preferences too. Thoughts on Syabas support? Share them here |

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
It's a full folder rip, but I thought if I set the language that it would always force subtitles on in the language given that there is an off selection. I'll try it though.
That worked :-). Thanks! |

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
Not quite. It's more like a 'forced subtitle' language, so if a feature needs to display subtitles when the dialogue is in a foreign language it knows which subtitle language to use.
My copy of Avatar has subtitles in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, but also has 'forced subtitle' versions of these tracks which contain the subtitles only for the dialogue sections that are in Na'vi. The subtitle language in the setup screens tells the PCH which of these tracks to use at these times. EDIT: If you've got a foreign language film and the audio track is labelled as such it will also use the subtitle language to set the subtitles on by default, which may or may not be what you expect. RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
Actually yea it forces subtitles for me on everything when I change that setting. With avatar it's only when navi talk but it's during all speech on other movies

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
Do you have the language above set to English as well?
Mine has language and subtitle language set to English and I get subtitles when I watch a film where the default audio track isn't English or when there are forced subs, e.g. Avatar. I've just checked a DVD and BluRay (ISO) rip and they are behaving as expected. Thoughts on Syabas support? Share them here |

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
Hmmm I have it set like you but still have the issue. Could be different for full rips. What do you have in your preferences for subtitles? Under DVD/bluray there is an option as well as in preferences. I've tried a combination to no effect but I figured I'd try you exact setup. Running a c200 with newest firmware. I also have an a200 but haven't tried it yet.

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
On The BD/DVD/Audio CD screen I have Subtitle Language set to Off.
I'd never paid attention to that, so I don't know what it does different to the other subtitle setting on the Preferences screen. Dave? Chris? Thoughts on Syabas support? Share them here |

RE: Avatar Collector's Edition Subtitles
The two different subtitle language settings are for the two different media players within the firmware. One plays single file types and that subtitle setting is the one in preferences. The other plays multipart files like DVD ISO/video_ts and AVCHD/BDMV/BD ISO and that subtitle setting is the one in the DVD/BD section of the settings screens.
Setting the language does mean that if there are subtitles in that language they will be displayed. It also tells the player which code page to use for different languages. Forced subtitles are displayed IF you set the flag and don't have any language set. I've just tested this with my LOTR discs when using BDClown/MKVMerge to rip then to MKV. I also tested with a AnyDVD HD backup and you must select the subtitle in the menu that appears upon playback. BD discs are authored in quite a few ways. Some just start the movie playback and don't visit the main menu unless you then stop the movie. Some display the main menu and lets you choose your options for audio and subtitles. Some start with a sub-menu that asks you to select a language first before then either starting movie playback or moving on to a main menu. It's a bit of a nightmare, as some forced subtitles will be flagged on discs, I expect it's due to them starting playback rather than the menu, and on others, no flags as they expect you to do choose, as it visits the menu for you to make your selections prior to playback. That's why MKV where you can see and edit flags is popular as it's easier to control, in fact coming from AVI to MKV it really is it's strength in that MKV is very easy to work with in comparison to other formats.
