Mac OS X Lion File Sharing with PCH - Fix!
After ages hunting around the internet to solve this I thought I'd create a thread here for anyone else who has this issue.

THE PROBLEM
---------------
OS X Lion has utterly messed up file sharing. The new way of sharing files with Windows is weird to say the least as well as a bit flaky. Sharing with Linux is, largely, a non-starter and definitely not with the PCH as OS X SMB shares are now Samba 2.0 based rather than Samba 1.0.

THE FIX
---------
Firstly, disable File Sharing in the System Preferences 'Sharing' pane on your mac.

Secondy, go here...
http://www.johnlarge.co.uk/2011/07/19/os...t-working/
...and follow the instructions to install macports and samba. (Basically, we roll it ourselves - joy!) It seems quite daunting at first but if you follow through the article step by step you'll find it fairly straightforward. The article suggests using TextWrangler to edit files, alternatively you can use TextEdit or Smultron by using 'Go/Go To Folder' to locate hidden folders in Finder. The macports files are placed in the /opt directory.

You will now have Samba running but you'll have no users so after you've added your shares create a user by typing the following into a terminal window...

sudo smbpasswd -a nmt

You will be prompted to provide a password. This will create a sharing user account called 'nmt' that you can use to connect to the file share with from your NMT.

Once you've done this and edited your smb.conf file accordingly run this again to restart Samba...

sudo /opt/local/sbin/smbd -D && sudo /opt/local/sbin/nmbd -D

I'm not sure that the launcher part of the article above works to start samba on startup yet. I'm not convinced. One possible solution is to create an app to execute on startup using Automator - I'm going to look at that if the launcher continues to fail for me.

Anyway - Hope this is helpful for people and they don't spend three days cursing Steve Jobs and hitting their head agains a wall like I did.

Also a big shout out to John Large for writing the article that got me kicked off with this in the first place!

I do love my Macs but Apple really p**s me off some times.

There's an easier way:

Download NFS manager, and there you go.
I have Lion 10.7.1 and a PCH C-200 and they are back on speaking terms...

I couldn't get anywhere with this - It would just fail, saying that it had done something but the operating system would not respond.

Which parts do you find slow? The GUI browsing? (I use page up/down) Aquarias is the slowest skin.
The streaming speed? Should be faster than smb and nfs.

I'm sorry - I realize that I never responded to this. The navigation is what I find slow - I have a pretty large library and having to page through it to get to something that starts with say "M" is pretty laborious.

After some tweaking and trial and error I must say that I got Samba sharing to work on my MacBook running Lion with my A-300. Thanks! If anyone needs some help on this please let me know. Perhaps I can help (or not) ;-). Thanks again!

Installed 10.7.3 last night and my smb connection is still a no go. I had serious NMT db stability issues w/ mac osx. How are others finding it?
