NETWORK speed question. Again
OK Guys have a question about a network suprise that I didn't anticipate, a.k.a. why did this happen?? (Currently not home so I can't give the model numbers of the router or switches)
background... have two desktops (gig lans), three laptops, server (gig lan), and c-200(set at auto) in a home network. All connected to a netgear 8 port gig switch (except the laptops) The c-200 is in the living room connected with a 25 foot cat6 cable run under the house. I have always run it in auto and not had any speed / connection problems so to speak. Everything is assigned an IP address and that is controlled by the netgear wireless N gig router that is " in front" of the 8 port switch. Moved the server to the same shelf as the c-200, disconnected the c-200 and just connected the server to the lone cat6 cable until I could get a 4 port gig switch. Got a netgear 5 port gig switch, and here is where the question begins. After hooking up the c-200 and server to the new 5 port switch, speed to BOTH items has INCREASED. Not a lot, but it has been very consistant for both. Transferring files from desktop to server has increased from 16-18MB to 24-28MB and on c-200 has increased from 6-8MB to 12-14MB, once or twice an 18MB. All file movements are made from the desktop to the components with filezilla, and that is where I got the speed numbers from. I haven't upgraded anything else, including filezilla. Why the increase?? is the port switch acting like a booster on the long cable run? Was happy before, really happy now!! Thanks for any insights! RE: NETWORK speed question. Again
probably less bugs in the new model making it work better with devices connected to it with other odd bugs.. not uncommon to have some models that are horrible and others that are stellar

I didn't know if using two switches at one time was even doable. still learning alot from everyone here! Thanks! RE: NETWORK speed question. Again
I have a router and two gigabit switches in my home network. All streaming/sharing traffic goes through the switches rather than the router, so saving the routers cpu for the tasks with incoming traffic rather than internal. See sig for brand/models.
I find that having the NMT Apps installed helps and so does using static internal ip's. A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407 |
