Segate GoFlex Desk 3 TB via USB - works with the A300 or not?
Is ANYONE using the Segate GoFlex Desk 3 TB external hard drive connected via USB (either direct or via a hub with multi drives) right now with the current firmware?

there are tons of threads with talk about these drives but with the recent firmware updates and the fact the Confirmed Hardware Compatibility list currently does not list the Segate GoFlex Desk 3 TB, this question needs to be asked again. The HW list has all of the other GoFlex Desk external drives listed, 1tb, 2tb, 4tb, etc, but no 3tb???

One poster said his A300 would not see his Segate GoFlex Desk 3 TB drive, and it had something to do with the Seagate default format Allocation unit size and it was suggested to reformat using NTFS with 64kb. However I do not know of anyone that has done this and reported back that it worked.

I really would like to avoid having to reformat the drives so it would be nice to confirm that the drive as it comes from Seagate works fine without any issues.

It would also be nice to understand why this drive isn't on the HW list.

It's not on the HW or WIKI because no one has taken the time to help out other users. Shame on GoFlex owners get the WIKI updated or let me know and I'll do it for you.

My A-300 should be here today too, and will begin my own testing a well. Good luck to us both. Smile Let's hope we can add the 3tb to the hw list.

Thanks!

RE: considering a-300...
you could try powerplugs where you use the mains for a hard wired connection

Again, with mixed results depending on your mains electrical wiring

A-300 , WDTVLiveHub, Cisco 8 Port GBit Switch, Seagate GoFlex 3TB usb HDD, WD 3TB Green Caviar HDD, ONKYO 609

His signature says he's got that hdd on his a300

My buddy brought his over and worked fine. Just remember to get all that Seagate crapware off. Also, no matter what the box says about the warranty, all Seagate and WD drives only have a one year warranty after Jan 1 2012. The failure rate is so high on these drives that I would never consider using one unless you have a solid backup.

Right I've added it to the WIKI list and also mentioned about 64bit and proprietary software sometimes causing issues. The later is not specific for the Seagate just a comment in general that like USB sticks with their U3 software some exteranl HDD have software and server software that can cause issues.

Hey, I did take up the challenge ....nearlyRolleyes

I made sure there was no Seagate s/w on the drive but with it possibly being the 64bit issue I couldn't bring myself to move 2.7tb of data and re-formatting the drive especially when I got it work fine as a network share

RE: Segate GoFlex Desk 3 TB via USB - works with the A300 or not?
Checked and the drive is NTFS formatted

Pretty sure its a 64bit enclosure as I think that is hardware related and other owners of the same drive are connecting fine via usb

Have checked and can't find any dodgy files/sw on the drive - even when displaying 'hidden files'

Any suggestions ?

Would be nice to have the option of connecting directly via usb

What is your issue? Have you tired to plug it in?

NTFS = good

Never heard of a 64bit enclosure, but the mention of the 64kb file allocation size was suggested, see first post in this thread. I wouldn't worry about this unless you have a issue and cannot connect. If you do, Try reformatting the drive first, taking the defaults with NTFS.

Otherwise, delete everything. The Seagate software is in a single diretcory, which is NOT hidden. Delete that Segate directory for sure. Once you see no files, copy some movies to it and try plugging it in.
