DLNA on OSX?
I am trying to playback some TV shows that are on my mac rather then stored on the actual NMT (A210). I first tried mounting smb shares, and I was able to mount it and browse for a movie file, but when I try it play it, the spinning cursor goes forever and never plays it.

If I copy the file over to the NMT it plays fine by the way.

I am presuming the problem must be related to the slow NIC on the NMT. In any case, I have been trying several different DLNA servers on OSX to see if streaming it that way would somehow be more efficient, but so far none of the ones I have tried give me playback. I have tried to stream photos and videos. I'm able to see the DLNA server and browse the shared files there. WHen I try to play one, I either get an error that it can't be opened or the spin cursor just goes for a while then quits, no playback.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Can anyone reccomend either a better approach for viewing vids I have stashed on the Mac, or a good DLNA server that works?

So far I tried iSedora, Twonky and a couple others I can't remember now.

RE: DLNA on OSX?
From what posts I see from other Mac PC users you should be looking at NFS rather than SMB.

The spinning is not because of a slow NIC. The NIC is not slow as it has gigabit link speed and can transfer at 11MB/s using the NIC and the Sigma SoC with its low power cpu.

the spinning is because something is not right in your setup.

Wish I could be more pointed but I've never even seen a Mac in real life.

Ok....will try NFS, but the question still stands about DLNA servers

RE: DLNA on OSX?
Tell us a bit about your setup, see my sig below.

FWIW I just use myiHome Mac when streaming from my iMac, works just dandy.…

RE: DLNA on OSX?
I didn't even know myiHome mac even existed. I will try that too. I just tried NFS, didn't work...spinning cursor for a minute, then just goes back to the list of files. I am able to browse all the files on the NFS share no problem. when I try to play one, it spins for about a minute then just comes back.

Once again, give us some details of your setup; e.g. your Mac model/OS version, etc.

RE: DLNA on OSX?
mac model is macbook pro quad core

Mac and NMT are both plugged into gigabit router (netgear N750)

oh I should mention I recently switched to Lion in order to try to use iCloud. That was a mistake as it broke several things for me.. Hard to believe Lion is still so crippled as of now, but maybe that is an issue here?

RE: DLNA on OSX?
Yup, Lion broke SMB (Apple's using their own version of Samba.) That's why I'm still on 10.6.8…

This is supposed to be fixed in 10.7.3, due any day now.

RE: DLNA on OSX?
I did have this problem on Snow Leopard too though. As of now, Samba doesn't work. NFS doesn't work. I tried several DLNA servers on OSX (SL), they didn't' work. I tried to install myihome, it can't install, it seems the dmg file on the myihome download site is corrupted or something. But rumor is that its not compatible with Lion.

So...at least for now, I'm unable to do anything other than transfer movies over to the NMT via ftp and play them local.

Bummer.

I suggest you talk to the author of TOMY (Auggie.)

Be advised that he's taking a bit of a break so may or may not be easily reachable; FWIW IME he's always been super responsive.

This is the second time I've heard that 10.7.3 will fix whatever SMB issues there are between an NMT and Lion, but I'm not sure this will happen.

The primary reason why NMT's can't access a Lion SMB share is that Lion uses version 2.0 of SMB whereas NMT uses version 1. Obviously, v2 is not backwards compatible with v1.

I'm on the 10.7.3 beta distribution and so far, and I have confirmed that under the latest beta D46 release, my C-200 still can not access the 10.7.3 SMB share.

I'm not sure if Apple is putting in v1 SMB in 10.7.3, but I haven't seen evidence that there is. I think Apple is concentrating on getting Lion to work with other SMB servers reliably (i.e. tweaking its client side) versus getting v1 SMB into Lion (i.e. server side)...

Can you describe:

1) The exact steps you performed on your Mac to setup an NFS share?

2) The exact setup you have on your PCH Network Share you created to access the Mac NFS share?

RE: DLNA on OSX?
My bad, I noted in the release notes that, among other things, Apple was fixing Windows/SMB sharing in the next release:

"The new 10.3.7 build also incorporates fixes related to smart cards, directory services authentication, and Apple's homegrown Windows file sharing, which the company just began using in Mac OS X Lion after dumping SAMBA as the code it uses for working with Windows PCs over the network.."

I took that to mean all our SMB problems would be automagically solved, silly me.

RE: DLNA on OSX?
I wish that were true that Apple was fixing ALL SMB issues; alas, I'm afraid that's not what is happening.

I could be wrong, but D46 proves to me that it's still the NMT->Mac SMB issues are not worked out.

Allow me to reiterate: bummer ;-(

Oh well, worst case for me is just to stay put @ 10.6.8.

RE: DLNA on OSX?
If you are in no hurry to upgrade, I can't see any significant reason to upgrade to Lion. And there are quite a few "quirks" and issues with Lion that are truly bothering me, and my repeatedly bug submissions aren't being addressed.

Even the removal of scrollbar arrows is extremely frustrating; without these controls it is sometimes impossible to scroll graphic design apps (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), and even productivity apps (Word, BBEdit), with any real precision to exactly where you want.

As a developer, I had no choice but to eventually upgrade my desktop iron to Lion. But I wish I could go back to Snow Leopard permanently, at least until they address some of the issues I've pointed out. But Apple is now at 10.7.3 and I still don't see the fixes I am looking for...

OP: Sorry for hijacking thread! I await your answers to the questions I posed.
