A-300 won't play avi files.

Hi,
For some reason I can no longer play AVI video files, whether they be DivX or Xvid. No problem with mkv, vod, and....(can't remember all).
I am trying to stream them from my Synology 712+ NAS to the A-300.
Funny thing is I can play the same DivX and Xvid AVI files streamed to my Samsung tv using Wlink (streamed from the NAS to TV via ethernet).
Sorry I'm quite new at this but can't for the life of me figure out why the Samsung TV can decode (is that the right word) the files, but the A-300 cannot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

first off post a mediainfo output of the file. second are you connecting over samba or using some sort of upnp/dnla software

Thanks for the real quick reply. I am simply selecting the video by using the standard Jukebox application that came with the A-300. Below is an example of a file that cannot play, however any file that is in an AVI container will not play ( that I've tried so far). I'm quite sure some of them played before, however not 100% as previously I didn't pay much attention to the file type.

nothing stands out. i would run it through avimux. and see if it plays after that it takes about 30 seconds to run through avimux it will remake the avi header

Thanks. Will give it a try. Actually no Avi will play at all. Just downloaded another one to test and same problem. It's frustrating that they will play on other devices, all streamed from the same Synology NAS but not the A-300.

Sorry, I'm not sure. I haven't set up any shares on the A-300 and just used the setup wizard. I don't have any hard disks installed in the A-300 and none on USB either. Only linked via ethernet to my Synology NAS.

Synology is just listed.
As an aside, sometime it gives me an error message when I click on Diskstation (name of my Synology NAS). Then I have to go back into the Synology and reset the list of connected UPnP/DLNA devices within the LAN. However it still doesn't allow me to play any AVI files.
It's easy to know without opening the files because the little icon beside the file (in A-300 Jukebox) shows an exclamation mark (!) rather than the little film reel icon. I'm assuming that the A-300 is telling me it doesn't recognize the file as a video file.

Ok you are using UPNP software Which could be your problem. Connect to a real share on your synology and see if it plays. You can check the wiki for how to setup a real share. It would be the same way your PC connects to it like a mapped drive.

Well the problem is definitely the Synology/network. I can play the same trouble files directly from an external USB disk but not the Synology NAS.
I gave the real share as you mention but so far can't get the A-300 to see anything under Browse Network, even though the Synology does have shared folders (same folders seen when clicking Synology in Networked Media on the A-300). Likewise the Synology setup does already show the A-300 in the Media Servers device list.
I'm a little lost and definitely over my head in setting this up so far. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi,
It works!!! Thank you so much for giving me the lead about UPnP!
I don't have a clue why, but those AVI will play now that I set up shared folders on both the Synology and A-300.
The way it worked for me is that I had to set up NFS TCP shares (via Add Share) on for each individual folder (Video, Photo, Music) in the A-300 setup and set up NFS Privileges for each Shared Folder in the Synology setup.
Once I did that I could see each Share (and files on Synology) under the A-300 Networked Media menu.
I'm thrilled! Now all I have to do is figure out if I can make a single share rather than individual ones for each shared folder.
