Western Digital 6TB MyBook Live Duo Personal Cloud Storage NAS
HI,

Just wondered if anyone has used one of these and can give me a heads up on how good/bad they are.

I have a PCH A110, and would be wanting this for newsgroups and streaming to my PCH A110.

RE: Western Digital 6TB MyBook Live Duo Personal Cloud Storage NAS
I have no experience of this model but have numerous experiences of their older MyBook pro devices (USB2 and firwire models). I have had 3, 1 x 500gb and 2x1TB.... ALL 3 died within 14 months. Luckily 2 within warranty (one died within a month, the other lasted 6 months) and I got my money back. I was left with one of the 1TB drives that died, out of warranty so I took out the drive, it was fine, it was their controllers that flaked out. So, after this experience I would personally never buy a WD storage solution (though I do buy their bare drives).

If I were you I would look at a more flexible real NAS solution (I can recommend Synology).

Samsung PS50P96FD Plasma (ISF Calibrated), Sony BDP-S550, SkyHD, HDMI 4x2 Matrix, Synology 1511+ with DX510 25TB NAS, Onkyo 605 receiver, Kef Q Series speakers QED cables.
C200 & A210, A300 1.5TB Internal HDD in each.

Is the DS412+ overkill for an NMT, just gonna use it to access my movies and series...also gonna use as backup?

RE: Western Digital 6TB MyBook Live Duo Personal Cloud Storage NAS
Depends what you call overkill, I use a Synology 1511+ with DX510 expansion filled with 3TB drives streaming to my 3 PopcornHours..... Overkill is relative Smile

The 412 is a pretty good machine (I have 2 friends with them) and will probably do more than you intend initially but its nice to have other features like FTP and ezCloud (which allows you to access your files from anywhere over the internet). You do have the option to expand from 2 to 3 to 4 drives as your needs expand (and they will!).

Oh and I have the nas running YAMJ and auto building my jukebox for me with sickbeard & sabnzb running. A very neat solution.

Jup,you're right about the expanding part...2 drives are not gonna suffice Smile I think I'm going for the DS412+Cool

Which drives do you suggest? And what speed do they need to be?

Thanks for the advice...

RE: Western Digital 6TB MyBook Live Duo Personal Cloud Storage NAS
I have 3TB WD Green 5400 sata III drives in my 1511+ Though I believe DSM4.0 (the Diskstation manager/firmware) has added support for 4TB drives now. It shouldn't matter too much, WD Green drives are a pain as you are recommended to turn off/change the head parking with WDIdle.

Any make should do and for streaming 5400 are fast enough, produce less noise & heat (my drives sit at a constant 34c in use). If I went for 7k spin drives more heat = more likely the case fans would speed up = more noise etc etc... I'm sure whichever you pick will be OK.

I have just started using sickbeard & sabnzb, which is great and then I manually run YAMJ. Do you have to manually run YAMJ too after sickbeard & sabnzb have finished?

No, I have my NAS run YAMJ rebuild automatically at 4am every morning (it is set as a CRON job). Though you can get it to auto run a rebuild after SB/SAB has downloaded something, I think there is a python script you install into SabNZB to run after a download.

I run on demand and scheduled also. My nas does the running and its a series of cron and additional post processing Scripts to achieve it.

If you do get a Synology check out http://missilehugger.com/ as he has created a lot of packages that make installing applications so much easier

RE: Western Digital 6TB MyBook Live Duo Personal Cloud Storage NAS
When I skimmed the thread, I didn't realize you were asking about nas choice. I like to look at what else a nas can do and how I can grow into it. The big things for me, is the tools I want to use on it or looking at plugins available to make my life more automated and easier. The second is how to expand, not all models can use any drive sometimes your stuck with all the same drive and to upgrade you need to continue or replace them. In a world where we went from 1tb to 4tb drives in the life of my nas, it's a big deal to me to not be able to add the next largest when it's time.

Generally look if the nas can run couchpotato and sickbeard. That will help you gauge a model that is probably so low end, not only can you not do anything else with it but it might cause problems playing videos from the pch.
