[Bug] New Firmware - Error Playing MKVs

New Firmware - Error Playing MKVs
I've had little problem with A-300 until I upgraded to the new March firmware. All my videos are MKV made with both handbrake and makemkv, and I keep the DTS-HD Master track, which I pass through to my Onkyo Receiver. The problem occurs when playing a movie for around 10 - 30 minutes, the playback will freeze. I can press stop to exit back to YAMJ, but when I try to play again, I get an error saying that the video can not be played, and it flips back to YAMJ. I've reinstalled the old firmware and I have had no problems since then. I'm not overly concerned since I can use the old firmware, but I have not seen any other people report the same problem. Definitely want to fix if I'm doing something wrong in case this problem is in all future firmware versions for me.

Some info:

-I am streaming off a hard drive in my PC to my PCH
-I have PCH hooked up to Onkyo 609, and then to TV
-I am playing 1080p MKV with DTS-HD Master audio track.
-Error occurs approximately 10 - 30 minutes of playback.
-I can restart the machine and jump to the point of the freeze, and it'll play over that spot with no problem (but will freeze later).
-No problems with Dec firmware (I've tested on multiple movies)

Thanks!

RE: New Firmware - Error Playing MKVs
Could be network related as audio is the first to go out if there is a bandwidth issue...
If you can play from the local drive at least we know where to look..

PCH-A100/A210/C200/A400 500GB EXT3 HDD<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Onkyo TX-NR1010<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Panasonic TX-P46S10 + 6 Bowers & Wilkins speakers.
10 NTFS 2TB USB drives on 3 hubs attached to the A400, 2 Seagate blackarmour NAS 3TB, 2 Seagate Central NAS 4TB.

The inability to setup and configure the NMT should not be disguised as a defect of the box...

The only reason I think it's not a network issue is because I have no bandwidth problems with the Dec firmware and everything is wired (no wireless). Also, the audio doesn't go out first for me, it just freezes all at once. If I stop, I can't play any other videos either, so seems like it's more than just a bandwidth issue.

Are you saying that the new firmware perhaps introduced new network problems with the PCH?

Thanks!

The problem with that theory is once you crash a video for any reason you need to reboot to free up the decoders again, So a network issue can cause other videos not to play after, But yes firmwares can change network stacks, But A lot of people play mkv with dts-hd myself included almost same setup except Im connected to an onkyo 608 and have no issues,

Couple things to try flash new firmware do a factory reset test network streaming if you get a freeze movie same file to usb playback and test local playback if no freeze you can start to look at network settings.

Hi, I have a similar issue with A-300 and BD ripped dts MKV. it seems a network related issue indeed because if I play those files from internal SSD they work fine also on the A-300. The A-300 locks when streaming MKVs from the Qnap NAS.
but at the same time the issue seems related to A-300: with my old A-110 with identical network settings they play perfectly.
no changes if I set 10/100 or gig on the A-300, I have the same beavior: video and audio freeze, the system responds to stop but without a reboot it is no more able to play any other video.
Looking at the switch port statistic I don't see any drop or packet loss, there is not any congestion or CRC on packets. Unfortunately my switch does not support port mirror to sniff the TCP behavior of the two popcorn hours looking for some differences.
on the other side on the A-300 I tested Samba, NFS and NFS over TCP with no changes.

Rgds.

RE: New Firmware - Error Playing MKVs
I had long frustrating hours fiddling with exactly freeze issues back in January, until I fixed the problem. It was indeed network issues. All stutter and freezes were gone after setting up the specific network ports in my Switch where the PCH and my W2K8 server are connected. Allow Gigabit traffic ONLY and flowcontrol on ports enabled. FIXED!

Still works like a charm with March 1st firmware. Still wonder why PCH can be so network sensitive. Could be the NIC inside PCH or just driver limitations. I don't know Big Grin

RE: New Firmware - Error Playing MKVs
There is no nic inside the pch.. the cpu does everything. it's an embedded single chip computer, not a different chip for everything computer.

RE: New Firmware - Error Playing MKVs
I finally had some time to look better at the issue and I found the cause for my issue: DVDFab created external subtitles files. If I remove those files the Popcorn plays the mkv files without any issue.....well, probably with some kind of error trap/message it would have been more easy to solve it :-)

When I tested the internal SSD I copied the mkv file only and this was the only reason why it worked.
