A300 Diagnostic Troubleshooting

So this is a tail about troubleshooting a A300 which started out with 30sec to 1 min spinning wait. This would occur on Network Browse or drilling down on a share.
Over a few weeks I ran into all these problems:

Slow access to Browse Shares or Network
Server not found
Share No longer found

Substituting an A100 solved all the problems....
Internet access was no problem on either unit.

The IP was assigned by the router using DHCP

The fix took many hours. The files were being served on OSX Lion which should not matter.

Changing to IP in the router to a different address ( and making it fixed instead of from a pool) solved all problems. Unreal. I can not figure out why this would present the above symptoms or why this fix worked.

At least my friend now has a fully functioning machine since it was purchased.

Static internal IP's are also a really good way of broadening your network knowledge:-

I have had the 30sec delay on my setup, which is static internal ip setup. Changing the DNS server address was the fix for me. Although a reboot of your router and giving that a little time also does wonders at times as well.

Thanks for that link Chris I've been looking for something like that. My dad's A-300 keeps losing wireless connection and I'm pretty sure it is because there was no static IP set up in the router.

The odd thing is the A100 I used for troubleshooting displayed none of the problems the A300 exhibited. The DHCP address was "good enough" for the A100 and partial functionality on the A300. I can't be sure if just changing the IP solved the problem or making it static did the trick. All my C200's function fine with DHCP set to "auto". The only other possibility would be some sort of corruption in the settings for that IP in OSX.. unlikely but not impossible.
N.B. Use of any ethernet cable besides Cat5e or Cat6 will force the A300 into 10/100 mode.

The A300 is my first NMT and from what I read from other users the older boxes needed less tweeking in general, weather it be NMJ database or network or whatever. From what I've seen, the A-300 CAN do everything damn near perfect its just a matter of figuring it out and troubleshooting till you got it.
