Problems playing xvid and mp4 formats on A110

I have had my A110 for approximately three years and have been very satisfied with its performance. However, recently when I try to play some xvid formated films or any MP4 formated film I have issues.
When I play an xvid film I only get video, this is only for recent xvid downloads I have some xvid films play perfectly I don't understand why. If I convert these to MKV format they play properly. With regard to the MP4 format, they do not play at all unless they too are converted to MKV. I would appreciate it if someone can tell me why this is happening.
