Advice on a NAS
I currently have my Popcorn C200 connected to two USB drives. I plan on extending my watching to another couple of rooms with a few more popcorns so USB drives are not the future. I want to get a NAS that I can access from all the rooms but most importantly be able to stream MKV converted BluRay files at full bitrate.
The last thing I want is stutter so the NAS has to be able to do the job. Anyone have any experience with any particular NAS's streaming high bitrate content and happy to recommend? Thanks Chris Popcorn Hour C-200 with 2.5" HD, Windows Home Server 4TB Storage, running YAMJ with iSkin for my iPhone 3GS |

RE: Advice on a NAS
many like the synology models.. especially the 1511+ (and it's newer version the DS1512+).. good mix of speed, ability to run other programs on it, support for different sized drives and expandable for more drives in the future if you get to the point of needing more drives without needing a new nas for them.
Just about anything would work for what you want, but be careful on the low end models most of them aren't much faster than a pch with speed and a multi-room situation that would be troublesome. Out of curiosity, is your WHS not working well enough? |

RE: Advice on a NAS
The Home Server failed badly last year and lost me a shit load of media, I have been using USB drives since then but I am tired of the slow network transfer speed and wall garden.

RE: Advice on a NAS
Build your own nas, use NAS4free.
With my C-200 i'm able to stream bluray 50GB iso's from my NAS4Free server without a single problem. have a look at http://sourceforge.net/projects/nas4free/ and/or http://www.nas4free.org |

RE: Advice on a NAS
I use my 2007 Synology CS407. It's gigabit and has enough power to stream 1:1 blurays via SMB or any other protocol.
The newer Synology NAS's are even more powerful. A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407 |
