QNAP NAS won't go into standby unless A300 off

RE: QNAP NAS won't go into standby unless A300 off
the upnp client will always ask for who is out there, that's normal. what you disabled was the upnp server in nmt. do you have any upnp/dnla servers, twonky, anything running on the qnap that you can disable? the discover shouldn't keep the drives whirled up but who knows what qnap is doing.

Hi accident.

Is one of those packets the 'discover'?

No, checked again when going through the list supplied by Qnap. upnp/dlna servers and twonky are disabled. About the only things running are samba, the master browser (without which the samba shares are not visible on the NMT) and itunes server (which I have previously disabled for testing, without any luck).

I am hoping to encourage the very helpful people at Qnap to have a look. I'm afraid putty is beyond me.

Thanks again for your continuing interest.

yes, that's the discover stuff.

Quote:the master browser (without which the samba shares are not visible on the NMT)

This statement is not correct. It's what allows you to click on network, see devices with shared resources and go into them. However with it disabled, you can still map and use the shares without hostname just fine. Then you get drive letters on windows and shares on the pch. Just a matter of using the nas ip instead of hostname on the pch. in windows you can \\ip.of.the.nas\share and it'll open that up and you can map it to a drive letter.

putty is dirt simple. you connect to the nas, login. You never posted what they told you to check so I assume they have a list of commands to type? It's just a matter of typing everything exactly the same and not skipping any parts.

Ah OK. I recall KL643 mentioning earlier in the thread that the Master Browser will keep the drives awake. I turned it off, lost my shares and just gave up and turned it back on. I'll give it another go.

Will mapping the share on the nas to a drive letter cause the discs to wake everytime I open Windows Explorer on my PC? Am I better off just having a link to the ip address on my desktop that opens Explorer???

I attached the message from Qnap Support to Post #29 above. No commands supplied with this message, but I'll ask for them.

Perhaps I ought go back and have another attempt at KL643's suggestions, switch to NFS and disable the Master Browser, try and get that to work with your extra info. Might save it for the weekend as I expect after the last experience that it will be far from plain sailing.

Thanks again accident,

When I look at the sniffer-info. I wonder why the PCH should keep sending any networktraffic when its in stand-by. Disabling network-interface would consume even less power in stand-by.

Yep, pretty much my thoughts - the NMT doesn't need to be accessing anything on the network with no apps running, no downloads etc. Damn nuisance.

Yes, the first thing I did. No noticable change.

RE: QNAP NAS won't go into standby unless A300 off
KL643, accident,

Morning guys. Managed to set up NFS and delete the samba shares, using KL643's guide on a previous page. Thanks KL and thanks accident for the hint on using the ip address instead of the host name (which I had done on my earlier attempt). Thanks for your patience - I'll never 'get' networking Blush Anyway, the nas is asleep and mostly staying that way. The nas drive have spun up on a couple of occasions for no apparent reason, but are now, at least, spinning down and stay that way for most of the day. Yet to work out whether the NMT is still involved in these sporadic spinups.

In any case, thanks for the assist.
