Information external 3TB WD HDD full drive access
I have a problem it's a 3TB drive and i only added 853GB and the latest ~70GB of video files wont play - why is that??
I've got a 2TB drive with only 30GB left and all the files plays without a hitch.

thought the issue with 3Tb drives should first come at 2.2TB and I thought it was solved?

it is the Western Digital 3TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive (WDBAAU0030HBK), it came preformatted as NTFS.

when i run chkdsk on the drive it says it is 4069 bytes sectors.
my OS is win 7 64bit

RE: external 3TB WD HDD full drive access
If i had to guess and going off the other thread when you said it was pre formatted. Im going out on a limb and saying it had some strange XP compatibility added to it. Remember osx/linux could handled 3tb drives just not xp and other 32 bit windows OS. My guess is not formatting it yourself has screwed you in the end. Any way to copy the data off of it wipe what came pre installed and start over.

RE: external 3TB WD HDD full drive access
F*** me. it didnt help at all.
Took me 10+ hours to copy it all over to another hdd. then I right clicked on the drive on my laptop an selected format and choose 4069 byte ntfs. then it took me 10+ hours to copy it all back.
the result?

i still can't access the stuff on my PCH.!!:'(

anybody got any ideas to what I should do instead?

RE: external 3TB WD HDD full drive access
don't waste your time copying to the drive after format until you try it with 1 file?

Not sure if this will help, I haven't used a drive in the pch in a long time...
1: right click computer select manage
2: open the disk management stuff
3: delete the partitions on this drive until it's empty
4: there should be options to convert to MBR or GPT. Not sure which will help but do that opton.
5: format it again, try 1 file and put it in the pch to see if you can see that file.
6: repeat but select the opposite that you tried before (mbr vs gpt) if it didn't work.
7: once working, then copy all your stuff and enjoy.

RE: external 3TB WD HDD full drive access
I cant just check with one file. because it is first after I exceed XXXGB of data that the new files won't play.
Btw it isn't an internal drive its an external USB drive.

but i might try your option

isn't there any body that has any experience with drives greater than 2GB?
what if I partition the drive would that make a difference?(but i rather not)....

the reason i wrote in the previous post that i couldn't access my stuff on the pch is because i have all my files in "ROOT\Visual Pastime" and after i copied it over I added a new folder "ROOT\new folder" where i put a new video file.

I can open the new folder but i cant play the video within. but when i try to access the visual pastime folder it just says "unable to process request" (or something similar, it is set up to Danish)..

does that make any sense? its a bit hard to explain in EnglishSmile

hmm..
i've changed the drive to GPT but now the PCH wont even show the drive.

it briefly says that USB_DRIVE_D is loaded, which is that one, but isnt in the menu..

RE: external 3TB WD HDD full drive access
well.. to others that may have a similar problem. don't use windows to format the drive. then it won't work with the pch.
use the "WD Quick Formatter" and select "Most Compatible" (NOT XP compatible). then it will work. now i just hope it still work when i get past 800GB. In about 10 hours i will know.

RE: external 3TB WD HDD full drive access
So all you did was use the wd quick format utility and that did the trick? Is it in ntfs format?

Thanks for your help, I will be going through this process tomorrow!

RE: external 3TB WD HDD full drive access
A lot of Windows PC's cannot format 3Tb HDD's. So using the WD utility sounds like a solution to the problem Windows users were having trying to format £tb HDD's.
Only new Windows PC's with newer efi bios can do 3Tb formatting from within the Windows OS from memory.
