Please tell me they have your old one so they can troubleshoot if this is a recall everyone situation.

You would really expect that Syabas would want the complete unit to determine exactly what occurred. I consider this a half ass way to determine the cause of the fire. They better watch out for a further investigation from the appropriate US agencies.

In all fairness its just the PSU that is needed as the sata connector is the one that caught fire, and its actually pretty common with any power supply just try a google search on it, I have a feeling a lot of people bend the pins when they insert and not know it and after awhile it shorts itself out.

RE: C-300 - Went on Fire
just to add, I experienced exact same thing this evening, my Sata connector has melted which was plugged into my BR player, and obviously killed that too Sad

Ive added this comment to my support case (#18413)

Quote:Hi,
I was half way through watching a short video when the PCH suddenly switched itself off and then continued to switch itself on and off again, repeatedly every 2 seconds.
Theres no obvious damage to the PSU, only the sata connector.

there was no power surges/spikes that was obvious at the time, no lights flickering and plenty of other equipment (router/nas/amplifiers/time machine etc) are all functioning correctly.

as I got close to the device I noticed smoke coming out so i immediatly switched it off.
after unplugging it, I took off the top cover to see the smoke was coming from the PSU. The motherboard appears to be intact.

due to the timescales, I would happily fit a replacement PSU myself if this can be issued, otherwise I guess i'll need a complete replacement, but I would much rather only replace the PSU. Im happy to send the faulty PSU back,

Kind Regards
Adam

Im happy to send this back asap for testing and willing to answer any questions. For me, I ideally just want to get a new PSU, back into my previous box (so I dont loose settings / configs etc). Also slightly annoying its taken out my BR player at the same time Sad

The worrying thing is, I watched something early on this evening, left the nmt on for 1-2 hours while I left the room to work in the office with my head phones, then came back in to watch something else.
Had this have happened while I wasn't in the room and listening to music it could have been a different outcome Sad

RE: C-300 - Went on Fire
Probably cheap adapters, cabling. Fire can occur if the cable is thinner than needed, is frailed internally, or is just simply made of low quality materials.

Great that you were around to catch the fire, but it could really happen at any time as long as the unit is powered.

This actually worried me, is there power to the Rom drive even when the device is in standby? I suspect so. very worrying confused

I personally dont think it has anything to do with the cables, they look like ordinary sata cables to me.
Ive seen alot of bad press with the NMT's Power supplies and I think they have QC issues there to deal with.

Just my opinion of course.

RE: C-300 - Went on Fire
All standby does is mute the screen and sound. nothing else changes (some exceptions, they have been working on actually dropping clock speed and such to really drop the power down to almost nothing).

As halfelite pointed out, it's a fairly common problem if you google about it. People damage the connector without noticing and the vibration of the drives eventually shorts out the connector which causes this. I'm happy to hear syabas took swift action to get the unit from you so they can look into it deeper in case it's a factory problem and need to take action.

I'll be interested to hear what they say.
I doubt its vibration in this case as the Rom drive has NEVER been used and I have a small SSD for the hard drive.

File a support ticket. Support office recently moved so it might have got lost in the shuffle.

People get so excited about postage costs.Rolleyes

What is this 'save your money' rubbish. Ask and you shall receive, don't ask and you wont get anywhere. As they say up here in the north of the UK 'shy bairns get nowt'.

Also remember that it could be worth checking out that £2 adapter for your ROM drive. It's put me off from getting one now.
