Is this even doable?
Here's one for you.

My current setup consists of 5 popcorn hours (a100s and a110s) all being served by a 15tb unraid server running YAMJ.

My mother wants to dump netflix and cable movie channels. She lives in a town about 30 miles away. I am wondering if there is a way for her to buy a popcorn hour and stream movies & tv shows from my network to her.

If so, which model of popcorn hour would be best and what would the general setup be like?

RE: Is this even doable?
you will need faster then 120kb/s upload to sustain even sd video play back over the net. but if you want to test it you have two options. VPN NFS or load something like llink on your unraid server its an http streamer and open the port and test from your moms house.

Another solution is ask what shows she wants and setup an option to sync folder from your NAS to her pc then she can stream local

RE: Is this even doable?
Just ran a few speedtests. I consistently get 1.5Mbps upload. I'm not thinking that will be enough to sustain a 720p mkv...

Although not exactly what you are asking about you could get something like a Slingbox and have that installed at your house which would allow your mother to watch your movies or TV on her computer. She could also watch it on her TV provided the TV was an internet connected TV. I have suggested Syabas incorporate something like that on a future media player but it would require an additional chip for encoding. Still, I think it would be a great addition for a Syabas media player. The downside to this approach is you probably lose some picture quality with the amount of loss depending on how much bandwith you have.

Another approach might be to run an FTP server and allow your mom to download the movie either through a computer or perhaps a popcorn hour device as anFTP client although Ive never tried to do anything like this so Im not sure how well it would work. Of course the downside to this approach would be that it might take a couple of hours or more to download the movie so you couldnt just click and go.

Funny thing is that my upload speed on my new Galaxy S3 using 4G stays around 15Mbps and I've seen it as high as 21.

Too bad I can't stream her movies through my phone...

why not? they make 4g routers. Of course the money your going at bandwidth might just be better to setup something for them to get their own collection going.

I might just end up doing that. I'm also looking into an option with plex. I have plex set up for my family's tablets already.

We both have unlimited data with Verizon...

None of these options are technically legal in the US. Of course YOU have a license to the content, since you own all the DVDs, right? Wink But she doesn't.

If it were me, I wouldn't care about legality. I'd buy a portable drive and when I see mom once a month, I'd copy whatever she requested onto it and leave it there as local storage/playback. That requires the least amount of technical knowledge for mom to have to troubleshoot, which is the primary consideration for MY mom.
