Apps on USB - why?

Apps on USB - why?
I'm having a few issues with my NMT Apps on USB on my A300.
After changing to the rear USB port it has improved performance but I've had two issues where things just stop working;

The USB suddenly becomes a media drive and the A300 computer name is changed and won't allow me to change it back.
I can still access FTP and SAMBA using the new name.
A re-format and fresh install of NMT Apps resolves the problem. The USB is a Sandisk Cruser and is used solely for Apps, nothing else.

I don't know if it's a bug but it could well be my USB drive is not fully compatible. As a result, I was going to try to put the apps on the internal SATA drive but wondered why external USB drives dedicated to Apps is recommended?

Thanks

The recommendation is for users who want their internal drive formatted to NTFS for easier USB Slave mode connection to Windows PCs.

Linksys E3000 (DD-WRT) - Cisco SG 200-08 - Synology DS1812+ - A-400 - Yamaha RX-V671 - Panasonic TC-P55GT30

Thanks for the swift response. Makes perfect sense.
My internal drive is indeed NTFS so therefore I'll plod on, reformatting my USB drive, every time the problem occurs.

I'll try another USB drive, too.

RE: Apps on USB - why?
It also helps with the future when you might have a newer model and want to move a drive. having the nmt on usb install makes it really simple to move the drive and replace the nmt install on the thumbdrive with no risk to your media files.

RE: Apps on USB - why?
Well, it appears everything was working anyway. Somehow the unit decided to rename itself.
I did the customary re-format and re-install regardless.
All back up and running again.

Thanks for the info, guys.

RE: Apps on USB - why?
The unit will rename if you do a factory reset or a frssh NMT Apps install and had anythign other than default names beforehand.

RE: Apps on USB - why?
you'll also see in that thread that some have contacted support and their units were repaired and others are magically expecting it to fix themselves which in a few months will turn into out of warranty syabas won't fix it complaints.

Although I would do a firmware recovery while waiting for support to get back. It might be a simple remapping of the nand needed so it's writing to a good block on the internal storage

I'll try this, thanks.

Is it best to follow this:

How to recover Popcorn Hour A-300 from firmware update failure with fail-safe kernel
http://support.popcornhour.com/article.aspx?id=1135

or should I just remove the internal drive (and NMT Apps USB drive?) and reset the player to factory default?

RE: Apps on USB - why?
Do the whole open it up jumper full recovery instructions in teh support article but get your support ticket opened. It's already the weekend with support and you'll want to make sure your near the front of the line monday morning.

Sadly this hasn't solved this issue for me. I'll keep an eye on the thread in the 'Bugs' section to see if others still experience it, too.

RE: Apps on USB - why?
then it's probably a hardware problem.. why let the warranty run out instead of contacting support? they are the only way to find out and get repair if it is a hardware issue.

RE: Apps on USB - why?
Get it RMA'd before its too late and you get angry with yourself for not taking the advice.
