Not Normaly. My audio configuratio is HDMI - on, RDC - off and the other option is downmix..... This means either that the audio is encoded very quiet in your movies or (more likely) that they have a large dynamic range and therefore the dialogue is much quieter than the explosions and other sound effects. With the volume on 0 the PCH is passing this exactly as it is encoded in the media (subject to a 2-channel mixdown) to the TV. TV programmes, by comparison, will be heavily compressed (audio compression, not data compression) since they need to be playable on all types of TVs, from little 14" CRTs with 0.5W speakers up to high-end units, but with the vast majority of the watching public using fairly mediocre kit. It gets worse when you get commercials because the advertisers have realised that if you apply even more compression, which brings your peak levels down, then it makes it easier to bump up the overall levels and have the commercials jump out at you really loud. So, in a roundabout way, this is saying that the PCH is doing exactly what it should. The volume can't go above 0 (0dB) without the potential to introduce distortion as soon as you get some dynamics. You need to live with it, or see if there's a relative volume option on your TV for the HDMI input that will help to level it up. If the TV companies and advertisers were not use as much compression as they do then this wouldn't be an issue, but you'd be really unhappy if film-makers started doing it do just to level the playing field.
