RE: Western Digital REDs out soon
According to http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5357
Affected models are: Quote:"WD20EADS, WD20EARS, WD15EADS, WD15EARS, WD10EADS, WD10EARS, WD8000AARS, WD7500AADS, WD7500AARS, WD6400AADS, WD6400AARS, WD5000AADS, WD5000AARS" However the community observed the same issue with some earlier WD10EACS and later models do not *appear* to be affected... http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic....24&t=11682 Quote: It seems that disks with version WD10EACS-00D6B0 (Nov 08) or later no longer show high LCC. Instead they show the START_STOP_COUNTER value as LCC. Question remains, if WD did really fix the problem or just mask it away by no longer showing the high LCCvalues to us. Quote:It seems that only 4 platter versions of the WD10EACS seem to be affected. All newer 3 platter versions of the WD10EACS are not affected. It guess that all WD10EADS (larger disk cache) are 3 platter versions and should not suffer from high LCC. This may be relevant to the RED's though .. When the load cycle issue appeared with the Greens ... Quote:Western Digital has the position, that they do not support operation of their disks with other OS than Windows and Mac OS. Maybe you could add some pressure or take back the recommendation of theirs disks." As the REDs are aimed at NAS, I wonder if WD have changed their support policy wrt to Linux. a lot of people were not impressed that WD did not initially support the Linux community very well when the load-cycle issue first appeared, only releasing a Windows binary to fix. Update - looks like nothing has changed re Linux Support http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/987/ Maybe a good reason to avoid the Reds for a more friendly vendor. How many NAS's running windows vs Linux anyway... Oversight: Jukebox | FeedTime: Automatic nzbs |

RE: Western Digital REDs out soon
The WD article is saying that you should alter the log writing to not have the drive spin up more often.. On the PCH you really have no choice with any caching and the drives spinning up wether WD likes it or not. It's just confirming that the idle timeout and spindown is just not friendly for this usage.

RE: Western Digital REDs out soon
I just RMA'd a Green 3TB drive. They sent me a Red Drive which I got on Friday. I haven't used it yet.
Any reason I would want a green over a red. (I'm just using this in a USB enclosure for now). PCH C-200 500GB 2.5 HDD + CH08LS10-> HDMI -> Onkyo 607 -> Samsung LNT-5271F -> Harmony 880 Movies served from DNS-323 Using SMB and USB Hard Drive Enclosure Connected to PCH |
