A300 confuses my TV (ie, something wont play)
So,

On the A300 using the file browser i navigate to a DVD folder, and hit play.

For about a second i see a picture then my screen goes black.

After a few seconds my TV says "Video format not supported."

Presumably the A300 is playing it now, on some strange channel the TV doesn't get - when I press STOP on the remote, the A300 interface pops back on the screen.

I then used MakeMKV to convert it to an mkv file. And clicked play on that.

Same thing happens, after about a second of picture the screen goes black, and the TV says "Video format not supported."

Now, the Boxee Box, and WDTV Live has no problems playing either files to the TV, so it seems like the A300 is sending weird HDMI signals to the TV?

It is a NTSC Dvd image, and I'm in PAL country - but again, other mediaplayers can do it - what's going on here?

RE: A300 confuses my TV (ie, something wont play)
What do you have set for your Video Output and Framerate Sync options? And does your TV support 24fps?

I'm guessing that you don't have NTSC framerate enabled and the A-300 is trying to convert to 24fps and your TV doesn't like it.

Brilliant plm!

Output was (and still is) set to "Auto", but "Framerate Sync" was at set at OFF (its default I believe)

I turned it to "NTSC/PAL" and now it plays fine.

Phew.

Thanks a lot Smile

you should adjust teh auto also.. Auto is a bad wording for that option, it does not always get the highest resolution possible.

RE: A300 confuses my TV (ie, something wont play)
Yes, if your screen is a 1080 screen then I'd set it to 1080P 50Hz.

You could use 60Hz as well. It really depends on what you watch most, since this is the framerate it will default to whenever you're in one of the PCH screens, so you can limit the number of times it switches by choosing your most common framerate.

RE: A300 confuses my TV (ie, something wont play)
If your TV has 1080p and 24p support then as it is a EU model I'd suggest the following:
Video Output: 1080p/24 or 1080p/50
Frameratesync: 24p/PAL/NTSC

The 300 requires all of your TV's possible output irrespective of what you select in Video Output. The 200 however if you set 24p, PAL or NTSC in Video Output does not require them in frameratesync and does not doa HDMI resync. Werner from Syabas mentioned sometime ago that they would try to go with the 200 setup but it must be proving difficult.

A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI
CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407

RE: A300 confuses my TV (ie, something wont play)
Chris

OT, but the 200, with the new firmware, does require you to put the supported video modes in framerate sync now or it framerate converts everything to the mode that's set in Video Output. So if you'd selected Video Output as 1080p/24 and had framerate sync off you'd get your European 50i TV programmes framerate-converted to 24p, and that particular conversion is really wonky on the 200s (juddering and lip-sync error). Or watching an NTSC movie on DVD it's 50:50 whether the 3:2 pulldown will lock onto the correct cadence of the underlying 24p content, so you'll get a beautifully smooth picture or a very fuzzy one.

In short, the goalposts seem to be moving! So put every mode your TV supports in framerate sync and pick the one you want the menus in, and anything that needs framerate converting to be converted to, in the video output box.

I dearly wish they'd properly sort this out and make it consistent, not least because I have a fairly strong hunch that something is causing the players to output 24fps rather than 23.976fps under certain circumstances which is what is causing the judder on some 24p content.

RE: A300 confuses my TV (ie, something wont play)
On some models of the C200 (like mine) AND if you set a subtitle language in preferences the screen will turn black on 25/30 fps files.
But only after you have played any 24p content.
If you come into this situation next time don't panic. Just switching off/on the unit (remote or frontpanel) will bring it back.
You will not see this bug again, until the next time you boot and play a 24p file again.
