Playback audio intermittent through HDMI

I've got things going pretty good now except for audio. There is a problem with the audio while playing a movie that is on the external HD (USB). I'm running a monitor as the display via the HDMI port, and have the audio hooked into the monitor headphone output then to a set of powered computer speakers. When I hook the speakers to the componet audio output everthing is fine except for the expected delay between the audio and video.

Is there a setting I've missed somewhere?

So you are sending audio over the hdmi to the monitor then out of the monitor to a set of speakers? More then likely its an hdmi handshake issue is it all audio? or just some audio you dont hear? or getting audio drops? Also make sure all audio under setup is set to downmix/pcm

If I were you I would just hook the speakers up to the rca audio out, and during a movie playing hit setup on the remote click video then click audio delay and set the delay. Because you are using a computer monitor the hdmi is more then likely shady at best.

At the point that the audio drops out, I've turned the volume up as high as possible and could not detect any sounds. I don't have any incication of when it will disappear or reappear, no fade, just on or off. There might be a couple minutes or 10 minutes without a sound, then all of a sudden it will just turn on for a while.

couple things to try. A different hdmi cable, next make sure you have a resolution set under setup dont leave it to auto.
