Mountain Lion issues?
Afternoon all,

Just upgraded both home iMacs to mountain Lion and now can not connect to my A100!

Used to work on Lion with no problems.

I can see the pch~a100 in the side bar under shared, but when I click in I get the 'There was a problem connecting to the server' error message.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Phil

RE: Mountain Lion issues?
You'll need to ask apple support why they no longer support samba and switched to SMB-X and made it incompatible with everything and trying to get companies to pay them to make it compatible with apple products again.

Your mac is not compatible with the a100, not the other way around.

Cheers guys.

Oh, the Fecking joys!

Okay, so now for an upgrade I guess. Is there any PCH that that does not need SMB?

Thanks,

Phil

RE: Mountain Lion issues?
I would argue you should not have use SMB to start with, it is the worst of the network protocols, the slowest and the most over-engineered.

Second best is NFS, and OSX has a new GUI to handle NFS exports.

Fastest is UPNP, and there are many UPNP MediaServers to chose from. Naturally, I would say try llink, it's free.

RE: Mountain Lion issues?
OK.

PCH is Linux, MAC is IOS and the rest is Windows.

SMB (Samba) is a protocol that allows the rest of the world to read and write to Linux filesystems. SMB is a service provided by the NMT so the rest of the world can access it also.
Now if one of brands decide in their infinite wisdom to change the way in which to talk to the world you have indeed the Fecking joys!

So in short it is not the PCH that needs SMB...... this is of course talking from a non Apple centric worldview point Wink

This was the simple explanation.... the real deal is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block

No, Mac is OSX. iphone/ipad are IOS. OSX is a Unix derivative (based on BSD). Linux is also a Unix derivative.

Absolutely not. Unix world uses NFS (Network File System). It is native, and part of the kernel. It is also Open, and precisely defined by RFC.

SMB is a Microsoft (Windows) attempt on a network file system. It is a behemoth, takes 12 packet exchanges to do simple auth. It was not documented publicly, and had to be (initially) reverse-engineered to add SMB support to Unix systems.

It is separate to the kernel, and runs in userland (some flavours of Linux can has moderate kernel support).

The reverse engineered SMB had questionable licensing. Apple chose to implement in-house version of SMB to get around that.

Due to Microsoft not publishing SMB changes between Windows versions, there is a noticeable lag for the Open implementations to be updated and add approximated support.

This is true. SMB was added to handle those users who have made the poor decision to go with Windows. Since you will not (easily) be able to use NFS, or UPNP. You are forced(-ish) to use SMB. And generally, Windows users are not smart enough to figure out how to install NFS or UPNP support.

Note here:
Unix has NFS, SMB and UPNP.
OSX has NFS, SMB, UPNP.
Windows has SMB.

RE: Mountain Lion issues?
I think it's because android and surface support samba so apple broke it in their "licensing compliance" updates. They want everyone to support airplay and pay them.

I remember the days when everybody gave Microsoft a (justifiably) hard time over their questionable ethics. How the times have changed... they almost seem like the good guys these days!

RE: Mountain Lion issues?
don't worry we are easyCool

are you screwed?....... No the apple discussion forum has some temporary workarounds and the easy way is using FTP.
Start the FTP service on the A100 and use a apple FTP client to transfer the files up or down.

Bug is with apple, looks like it moved from 16KB to 2KB so short paths work long paths fail.

RE: Mountain Lion issues?
It is still strange that you FTP Anarchy from your Mac to the A100, then watch it. When the BiggestSellingPoint of the A100, is that it can play Anarchy, over the network, from your Mac directly, without needed it to be copied to the A100.

RE: Mountain Lion issues?
Well, lucky for me I live in a massive apartment. The problem though is all the floor is covered 150 year old tiles, and they don;t have wooden skirting boards in Barcelona, they are all tiled. Internet coming in one end of the apartment and TV down the other, and no where to hide wires! So once I week, I bring the A100 up to the office and copy everything over. Its become quite the ritual!
