RE: [A110] Tutorial for fan installation
if its on 5v and your fan doesnt spin that could mean your fan wont "cold boot" with 5v
so its not enough power for it, 5v+ should make it spin
i've never had a fan do that for me though
if it spins at 12v then yeah thats your problem

Tried moving the jumper and it still won't run. Any other ideas?

RE: [A110] Tutorial for fan installation
dunno what you're doing wrong ... any computer fan will run at 12v ...

maybe take the fan to a computer and see if it runs there...

RE: [A110] Tutorial for fan installation
Maplins do the 25x25x10mm Evercool fan. Reading this thread it seems that 30mm is a tight squeeze and causes noise with the top and bottom lid. I do realise a smaller fan will be noisier but being a little bit smaller it will fit better so should be overall quiter. Also would it be a good idea to usea bit of bluetak to seat it?
Reccomendations please before buying the fan tommorrow, I dont fancy doing the top lid mod as it means drilling a hole through the lid which will invalidate any warranty.

Thanks
bub

RE: [A110] Tutorial for fan installation
i originally had the thought of creating the top lid with plexiglass making it see through, then raise it a bit so there is a nice enough clearance between heatsink and lid, then install a 60/80mm blue led fan on top, making it a bit colourful, see through and cool
that way you still have the original lid, but too lazy and not sure of a few things

tough to say cause i don't think anyones tried it ... going down to 25x25 is uncharted territory...

if you do try it please report back to this thread so we can know if it worked or not...

25mm fan running at 5v on cold boot aswell that sounds perfect. No noise, easy mod, seems no reason to want to try anything else.

Thanks for the useful info Tr|X, also thanks to the original poster who came up with the idea

RE: [A110] Tutorial for fan installation
Jon done installed the 25mm fan. Working at 5 volts from cold boot aswell. Secured it down with a bit of blueTak. Cant hear a thing, I had to check it was actually spinning. The hard drive is a lot louder than the fan. A few minutes work and only costing me a fiver, well worth it if you want your player not to overheat if you have a hard drive installed and also im sure the player will have a prolonged life now

Question RE: [A110] Tutorial for fan installation
'kenrippy'

Quote:here's what i did...i bought a piece of black plexiglass & a piece of 1/2" x 1/2" aluminum L metal.

I had a few questions if you remember, and don't mind answering. That plexiglass you bought, do you remember the exact dimensions, and the thickness of it? Also, where could I pick up those aluminum L's from?

sure.
the plexi is 1/8" thick. it was tough to find, a little digging in the phone book/411 and i found a seller with different colors. home depot etc. doesn't carry anthing other than clear. i bought a piece large enough to make 6 tops. i just layed the original on it and traced it.

the aluminum L metal is from home depot, i also saw it at osh hardware. i used a dremel to cut away the corners to allow it to bend easily. remember, if you don't change the heatsink to a lower profile one, you'll need a larger L metal to leave enough room for the fan. most 80mm fans are 25mm thick, the one i used was 15mm thick.

another thing to think about, the L metal is not always clean and in perfect condition (scratches/black marring) so i used a piece of 150 grit sand paper to clean it up. then it's important to seal it with some clear lacquer so the oil from your skin won't leave marks.
