Harddisks and storage

• If you have problems with your HDD in your NMT always ensure that you try the HDD after formatting it to NTFS in a PC. This will ensure that the HDD is initialized as some brand new HDD's are not and the NMT cannot format a none initialized HDD. Do NOT choose the Quick Format option as this may mean that the HDD is not recognized and the NMT Setup option is not available to install the NMT Apps, always use the Full Format option or alternatively use Roadkil's Diskwipe to format a HDD for use in your NMT.

• The A-200 has an internal SATA ports that fits both 2.5" and 3.5" HDD's. There is a guide available HERE to show you how to install the HDD. Additionally, there are external USB ports. All these ports can be used to connect various kinds of storage. Remember that you need at least 4GB of available space to install the NMT Apps and create the partitions.

• For 3.5" HDD drives, the general recommendation, , is to choose drives marketed with terms such as "low rpm" , "low noise", "low power consumption", "Eco-Friendly" and "Green", rather than ones sold for performance (which will usually have higher noise levels). These low power drives often have a rpm of around 5400, rather than the current consumer "standard" of 7200. Despite the lower rpm, they will have more than enough performance to satisfy all typical NMT usage demands. Alternatively they may be marketed as for 'Video Surveillance/CCTV' systems.

• Note: Advanced Format drives such as the Western Digital Caviar Green ending in 'EARS' use 4K byte sectors instead of 512 bytes which means they can be used with a single partition without problems but alignment problems mean other partitions must be aligned on 4k boundaries. Do not use until there is a fimrware fix.

• A note to testers: please verify if you needed to initialize the disk if it was new, if you successfully installed the NMT Apps or if you've chosen to use another filesystem/format. Other things to check for are noise and the possibility to tune/adjust the speed. Thank you for sharing your results!

• Using a 10.000RPM HDD is not recommended, they produce a lot of heat which might affect the performance of the entire NMT.

NOTES

1. Western Digital have starting with drive models ending RS a new way of aligning HDD's which may cause problems in devices which like the NMT run Linux. Whilst this is resolved I would purchase an alternative. If you have the drive already then Vista onwards is supposed to partition correctly the HDD, so format to NTFS on a Vista/W7 PC before placing in the NMT and installing the NMT Apps. Only if the apps install can you then move on to format the 4th partition, if the apps are having problems. I believe the problems stem from the fact that the 200 series has onboard SATA whereas the 100 series is IDE. CF cards need to operate in DMA mode to be bootable. DMA/IDE are the same which is why DMA is a requirement for a CF card to boot. The actual adapter has DMA/IDE controller as well when we need a SATA controller to match the 8643's SATA controller. If you can get a successful format then it should work fine, as can be seen from the poster above. How or why that time the card formatted is not known. On the 200 series the same has happened with two lucky owners having a successful install followed by the need to format a partition to ext to get it working, the rest of us failed.
