The NMT can act as a BitTorrent client, which uses the BitTorrent protocol to transfer large amounts of data. It is commonly used to transfer media such as films and music. To download content using BitTorrent, you must install the NMT Apps and have downloaded or have the URL of the torrent file, which contains the details of the download.

Enabling the Torrent Application

The BitTorrent client is installed as part of the NMT Apps and runs as a service on the NMT. You can start/stop the service using the following steps:

  • On the main screen, select Setup from the main menu on the left;
  • On the setup screen, select NMT Applications from the menu on the left;
  • On the NMT applications screen, you will see a list of services that are installed on the NMT along with their status. If the status of the Torrent application is stopped, select the button labelled start to run the service; if the status of the Torrent application is running, select the button labelled stop to stop the service.

Clients

The NMT comes with Transmission as the default torrent client. Early firmwares used BPTD as the client but due to private tracker requirements this was changed to Transmission. The webGUI from BPTD is still used but the client is Transmission.

You can install other torrent clients using the Community Software Installer

Downloads and Settings

The web interface of transmission can be accessed by typing the following address in your web browser.

http://IP-ADDRESS:8883/torrent/bt.cgi - where IP-ADDRESS is the IP address of your NMT, for example 192.168.2.2.

You can download a torrent using Transmission by using the following steps:

  1. Download a torrent file on your PC;
  2. Open the web interface;
  3. Click the Browse button and select the torrent file you have downloaded;
  4. Click the Upload button and the torrent will be added to your list and Transmission will start the download.

There are further features and settings. Click on Settings to select the port Transmission uses and to specify any download or upload caps in kb/s. Select the Schedule button if you need to avoid certain hours such as peak times.

Different torrent clients and versions

Transmission

The NMT uses Transmission as the default client. Many private trackers are very specific in terms of which torrent clients and what versions of those clients they allow. The present version as of 1 August 2009 is Transmission v.1.22. If your tracker does not accept this version then you can update to a later version via the Community Software Installer. Using the later versions gives access via Clutch on your web browser. This also gives access to additional settings such as being able to specify where to download, particularly useful for those that wish to download to a USB attached HDD. Users can upload in the method stated in Settings however they can also enter a URL of the torrent file.

BPTD

Originally the NMT used a client called BPTD. Again like Transmission a Linux torrent client. BPTD would most likely still be the default client were it not for the fact that the majority of private trackers do not allow it. BPTD is not as feature rich as Transmission but has low cpu resource requirement. You can install BPTD via the Community Software Installer

Others

Look in the forum Apps Section or in the CSI menu for further clients and version. ctorrent has been compiled for the NMT and im sure there are or will be other clients and of course new versions.

Additional Applications

NMTDVR (aka TorrentWatch)

NMTDVR, formerly known as TorrentWatch, is a script written by journey4712 et al, which allows you to automatically fetch torrents from RSS feeds on the Internet. It was initially designed to support TV shows, but it will also work with RSS for other media types. The script also supports a watch folder, to make it easier to add torrents to your PCH via ftp, smb, or nfs.

NMTDVR is a browser based PHP application which assists users with automated downloading of media from RSS and Atom feeds with support for starting items in various Bit Torrent and NZB Clients. It was originally developed for the Networked Media Tank, but can be installed on any Unix variant with php5-cgi and a web server.

In other words, you tell NMT DVR which shows you like, and every time it sees a new episode it will appear on your harddrive with no interaction necessary.
