Unpacking & Fitting HDD/DVDROM/BDROM Videos
- You will find that the unboxing videos on Youtube can be helpful for the initial setup - Werner did a practical demonstration of how to set up the basics:
C-200 internal storage options
- No internal storage installed. This still allows you to stream media to the C-200 from your networked devices.
- With only an internal 2.5" hard disk in the lower bay.
- With an internal 2.5" hard disk in the lower bay, and a 3.5" hard disk in the upper bay.
- With an internal 2.5" hard disk in the lower bay, and an optical drive (BD ROM or DVD ROM) in the upper bay.
- With an internal 2.5" hard disk in the lower bay, and a slimline BD ROM + 3.5" hard disk solution in the upper bay (this is not an officially tested and supported solution but at the time of writing, users are trying this method at their own risk).
The drive tray in the upper bay
The tray is intended for installing either of two things:
- A SATA connected 3.5" hard disk
- A SATA connected optical drive (BD ROM or DVD ROM)
Installation of a 3.5" SATA hard disk
To use a SATA connected 3.5" hard disk, the hard disk must first be formatted as either NTFS (Windows file system) or EXT3 (Linux file system).
+ for NTFS:
- Easy to format in Windows (requires no extra applications, just use the normal procedure in Windows for formatting a hard disk)
- The hard disk can easily be connected to a Windows system to copy or delete files (requires no extra applications)
- for NTFS:
- Because NTFS is not a native Linux file system (the C-200 runs Linux), it may slow down the C-200 boot up time, and hard disk access time.
- Means no NMT Apps, the installing of NMT Apps partitions and formats the HDD to Ext.
It is also possible to format a hard drive to the Ext3 file system, which is a Linux file system and the native file system of the C-200. To do this, see How to Format a HDD to Ext3. If you are intending to install the NMT Apps on the HDD then that process will format the HDD to Ext.
+ for ext3
- Native Linux file system, probably faster bootup time and hard disk access time.
- for ext3
- Can not be read by Windows PCs without installing third-party software. To be able to read and write to the hard disk from Windows, you need to install a third party application like the Ext2Fsd driver. Once the third party application is installed, it can be read by Windows.
- However, when an ext3 hard disk is inside the player (or attached via USB to the player), and is accessed over the network (Samba or FTP) by a Windows computer, it will be possible to read and write to the hard disk.
When you have decided on which type of file system to use:
- Turn off the C-200
- Open the top lid (requires a screwdriver)
- Attach one set of SATA cables to the back of the tray (if they are not already inserted there).
- Close the top lid.
- Open the front of the tray and slide in the hard disk with the connectors facing the back of the player and the shiny (label) side of the hard disk upwards. The hard disk will slot into place and the door will close in front of it.
- Power up your C-200 again. Now the hard disk will be visible in your source menu.
- Browse to the hard disk icon in the source wheel/carousel, press Enter, and then you will see the hard disk. If it has files on it they will show and you can navigate to the file you want and press Enter on it to play, if there are no files on the hard disk, it will of course be empty.
Installation of a 5.25" SATA DVD/BDROM
See the video in the Unpacking and Fitting Section above.
Fitting a 2.5" HDD
- There is space beneath the drive enclosure that is used for the upper bay to fit a 2.5" HDD.
- This HDD is usually the one on which you would install the NMT Apps. You can however choose either HDD to install the Apps.
- The 2.5" HDD should be fitted first before the upper bay is used. The video's above show the process:-
- Remove the drive enclosure from the C200
- Unscrew the mounting rails for the 2.5" HDD from the bottom of the case
- Screw the rails onto the sides of your 2.5" HDD
- Screw the HDD/rails back to the bottom of the case
- Connect SATA data and power cables
- For details of How-To install the Apps see Firmware & NMT Apps Updating or Reinstalling NMT Apps
Fitting a USB stick
- There is an internal USB socket on the right-hand side of the motherboard. This was initially for those that didn't use an internal HDD as storage was still required for BDLive.
- Firmware improvements now mean that the NMT Apps can be installed to the USB stick. This means that you can use any HDD solely for downloading and storage of your precious files. If the NMT Apps become corrupted then you only need to reinstall to the USB stick.
- For details of How-To install the Apps see Firmware & NMT Apps Updating or Reinstalling NMT Apps.
Turning off the C-200
Press and hold Power button on your remote for 4 seconds. The LED ring blinks orange and then turns red.
When it turns red, it is a sort of 'deep stand by' mode drawing very little electricity. From 'red standby' you can:
- Turn off the player completely: Turn the I/O rocker switch on the back of the C-200 to the O position.
- Turn on the player again: Press the Power button on the remote and wait for the boot up process to finish.
