Talk:Installing an Internal Drive

Can formatting the hard drive *really* take over an hour? It took less than 40 minutes on my Seagate 1.5TB, which would translate to under an hour even for the new 2TB monsters.

Davidwwatts >> I wrote that text. It was an estimate of the amount of time it took to format the drive + download the apps over the internet. I didn't time it, and yes it probably did take less time to format my 1TB drive and download/install the apps. I wanted to give the sense that it won't be a quick 5 minute activity. What do you suggest we write? David.

Luxury >> I'd suggest something like "This can take some time, approaching an hour for larger hard drives." (My main reason for asking was curiosity about whether there really were HDs out there that took so long, though :) )

Other Advantages to Installing Internal HDD?

Other than the availability of the "NMT Applications", are there any other advantages to installing an HDD? For instance, is there some better caching that improves interface performnce? Or movies start/seek times? Is this the only way to achieve skinning capabilities? I see many articles/pages on how to install an HDD, but not much on why one would do so. I feed mine via NFS and I torrent elsewhere...trying to understand the advantages at this point. Thanks!

Davidwwatts >> The thing I like about having an internal HDD is that I can take the unit with me on vacation (road trip) and be able to watch any movies or TV episodes I have on the disk. I guess there might be faster buffering times since the files are local, but I expect it is pretty negligible.
